Unlocking the Potential of Hydrolysis Lignin for Lead-Acid Battery Performance
Hydrolysis lignin is a distinct and underutilized form of lignin with exceptional purity and functionality, making it a promising material for energy storage applications. Unlike conventional lignins, hydrolysis lignin offers a more controlled molecular structure, reduced impurities, and optimized functional groups—key attributes that enhance its performance in lead-acid batteries.
Synergy Horizon has developed S-Drill™ EXP, a refined hydrolysis lignin-based expander designed to improve lead-acid battery efficiency. Through oxidative reactive extrusion, the molecular properties of hydrolysis lignin are further tailored to provide high-level cold cranking amps (CCA), enhanced charge acceptance, dynamic charge acceptance (DCA), and extended battery lifespan. Unlike traditional lignin expanders, S-Drill™ EXP maintains charge acceptance even at higher dosages, making it particularly effective for enhanced flooded batteries (EFBs) and start-stop systems operating under partial state of charge (PSoC) conditions.
Beyond its electrochemical benefits, hydrolysis lignin’s unique structure ensures an optimized lignin-to-carbon balance, reducing water loss and hydrogen evolution—factors that contribute to longer battery life and improved stability. Its performance has been validated in accordance with EN 50342 standards, reinforcing its suitability as a cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional expander materials.
As the battery industry seeks more sustainable and efficient materials, hydrolysis lignin may provide a reliable solution for improving lead-acid battery performance while supporting environmental and economic goals.
