Solar Hybrid Case Study & Optimisation

Battery Energy Power Solutions is a leading provider of innovative power capabilities in Australia and worldwide. We use a unique ‘in-jar formation process’ to manufacture gel valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries in Australia. The technology was developed in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). Through design optimisation, we have been able to extend service life. This strategy has proven successful for over a quarter century of field operation under Australia’s harsh conditions in both telecom and energy storage applications. Our solar hybrid systems provide hundreds-of-kilowatt-hours of battery storage each. Moreover, thousands of sites that have been in field operation for over five years. Herein, we examine system topology, duty cycle and battery analytics from these sites. Furthermore, we assess areas for continued improvement through equalisation optimisation, battery management, and complementary technologies.

Principal Technical Development Manager , Battery Energy Power Solutions Pty Ltd

Australia

Michael Glenn obtained his PhD researching fuel cells at The University of Newcastle in 2017 followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in this field. He then joined the renewable storage industry, working on battery management strategies for the UltraBattery®. Currently as the Principal Technical Development Manager at Battery Energy, he applies his PhD knowledge to design and enhance battery technologies for energy storage. This includes lithium-ion, lead acid and dual chemistry systems that optimise the total cost of ownership when the goal is to maximise the utility of a single battery asset. He is passionate about energy storage and making a positive contribution to the global energy transition.
