High End Lead Acid battery to Support Latest Automotive Power Train (Battery Design and Engineering for Improved Efficiency)

Lead acid batteries have been a staple in automotive application for over a century, but as modern vehicles demand higher performance, efficiency and reliability, traditional lead acid technology has struggled to keep up. High end lead acid batteries have evolved to offer better performance, longevity, and energy density. Modern vehicles have evolved significantly, incorporating start-stop systems, regenerative braking, and increased electrical loads from infotainment, safety (ADAS) and comfort features. This shift has created a demand for Enhanced flooded batteries (EFB) and Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries, which offer improved performance, durability and efficiency compared to traditional lead-acid batteries.

The changes/ transition in the modern automobile based on our own study and how it changes the requirements of the battery in terms of PSOC operation, Charge acceptance/recovery and Cycle life will be prologue of the paper. The requirements/characteristics have been incorporated in our design of ISS, EFB & AGM product range which are successfully addressing the power, performance requirements of modern vehicles. These designs have been deployed most efficiently by utilizing different plate making technologies. Comparative advantages of each of the plate making technology vis-à-vis the application substantiated with test data. The paper will conclude with a road map of product enhancement to cater future requirements.

Anjan Roy is a mechanical engineer with nearly three decades of expertise in product design and development for the automotive battery and material handling equipment industries. With a strong foundation in new product development, technology transfer, and warranty analysis, he has consistently driven innovation, efficiency, and cost optimization in every project.
As part of the product development team at Exide Industries Ltd., Anjan lead the design and development of automotive and E-rickshaw batteries, managing project execution, benchmarking, cost reduction strategies, and technical presentations for OEM customers. His key contributions include development of Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB), introducing advanced sealed battery concepts, and launching high-warranty products tailored for both domestic and export markets. These initiatives have significantly strengthened Exide’s leadership in the OE segment.
Previously, as a Senior Design Engineer at TIL Limited, Anjan played a pivotal role in developing material handling equipment, including truck-mounted cranes, reach stackers, and Défense related projects such as amphibious vehicles. His experience in warranty analysis, technical support, and direct customer interactions further enhanced his problem-solving abilities and customer-centric approach.
