For decades, glass non-woven veils have been used to prevent the shedding of positive active mass during the cycling of lead–acid batteries. Throughout the world, the veils are included in the production of start–stop batteries. Additional testing and experience from customers has shown that there are more benefits to be realized when employing the LifeMat™ glass non-woven pasting veils developed by Owens Corning. The presentation demonstrates that there are also ways for regular SLI batteries to take advantage of the benefits offered my LifeMat™ technology. Due to the very strong bonding of the glass veil to the active lead paste, the ‘running-in’ period of a battery is vastly shortened and the performance is stable from the first few cycles onwards. By contrast, a conventional (non-reinforced) battery will lose some performance during the early stages of cycling. The findings suggest that the use of LifeMat™ technology may enable battery manufacturers to reduce cost by lowering the amount of lead paste, or to extend the warranty period.

Before joining Owens Corning, he worked in various sales and marketing positions in the thin-film coating industry with a focus on introducing this technology into the automotive industry. Mark joined Owens Corning in 2011 as sales leader for the European Battery market. He is now responsible for the industrial segment of non-woven products in Europe and also coordinates the global battery business.
